Chapter Nine

I need to act fast. I grab Bella hard by the arm and harshly whisper, “Listen to me and listen good.” I have her thoroughly freaked out and therefore also have her attention. “Whatever he says, no matter what, they are not my keys. Do you understand?” She has absolutely no idea what I’m talking about but she nods in agreement.

Finn walks up to the counter I and collapse to my knees, making an effort to look like I’m doing something important on the floor. “Can I help you?” Bella asks, the confusion still in her voice. I pinch her ankle with my sticky fingers to stress that she needs to be cool. Not Bella’s strong suit.

“Yeah,” Finn’s voice answers. He sounds tired, like he’d been up all night or something. Of course I know he had been up e-mailing me. That makes me feel worse. “I found these keys last night and there’s a key chain on them to this place. I thought maybe you’d know if someone lost their keys.” There’s more in his voice than just the attitude of a Good Samaritan. For some reason that makes me smile.

“Um,” Bella stumbles, fighting the urge to look down at me. “I mean, I haven’t heard anything, we do sell a lot of those key chains-” Total lie, only the girls who work at Hap-PIE-ly even bother to purchase one. “But I’d be happy to hold onto them for you in case anyone comes looking for them.”

She extends her hand for the keys, but he pulled back quickly, pushing them protectively into his pocket. “No,” Finn stands firm, taking a seat at the counter, my counter, where I have to work. Damn. “No thank you, I’ll hold onto them.”

Bella shrugs. “Suit yourself. I’m going to restock napkins.” And with that she disappears into the back. In her mind she’s handled the situation. Bella doesn’t function well in awkward situations. Much more the sheltered wallflower is she, not one for drama.

I take a deep cleansing breath, the pungent sweet smell of the sticky floor makes me dizzy. My hair’s sloppy and pulled up in a messy ponytail. I have no sweeping beautiful curls like the night before. My face is covered in flour and sweat forming quite an interesting paste on my forehead and I’m pretty sure there’s some toothpaste crusted in the corner of my mouth. No beautiful makeup and flawless skin. I don a grey sweater and dark blue jeans with my Crocs. Nothing in comparison to the epic ball gown I’d worn yesterday. I remind myself of all this for a simple reason. There was no way he’ll know who I am. I mean above everything else I’d worn a mask. So imagine my total surprise when I rise to my feet and his downtrodden expression turns to a happy smile and he muses, “Hey, it’s you.”

My heart’s in my shoes and my stomach catapults to my throat. I’m going to drop dead right here. He
